Artist Yuzhu Yang Finds a New Home and Rediscovers her Childhood Passion on Prince Edward Island by Jennifer Wood

When artist Yuzhu “Zhu Zhu” Yang moved to Prince Edward Island 10 years ago, she knew that she would settle in nicely to her new surroundings. The gifted painter was born in Guizhou, China, in a small village where she was surrounded by mountains and valleys. When she was 10 years old, Zhu Zhu and her family moved to the larger city of Jiangsu, and she pledged to never forget her formative home.

At age 14, bored with the routine and convention of school life, Zhu Zhu left academics to begin to work, and at 17 she left home in pursuit of travel and adventure. In 2001, she met her husband, Danny Shum, in Shenzhen. The pair married in 2004 and welcomed their son TY in 2005, while still living in Shenzhen.

Danny had completed an undergraduate degree in industrial systems engineering at the University of Regina in 1992. Afterward, he grappled with Canada’s then struggling economy before returning to China to work. He later met and married Zhu Zhu. On TY’s eighth birthday, the young family moved to Prince Edward Island and Danny set out on new career paths as a real estate agent and driving instructor. During his spare time, he serves as a volunteer citizen on patrol for the community of Cornwall and a medical first responder for St. John Ambulance.

Zhu Zhu, a happily settled stay-at-home mother, remains grateful for the easier life that Prince Edward Island offers. The Island has given her the breathing room to recognize and pursue her artistic talent. “Painting was a hobby that I never dared dream of doing permanently in the environment I grew up in,” Zhu Zhu says from her living room, which doubles as her art studio. “Where I grew up, people lived hard; many often ignored their feelings and forgot about their interests and ideals because they were in a hurry to make a living. I had lost touch with my pursuits and ideals. But soon after moving to Prince Edward Island, I could see the poetry and beauty in my life again.”

Zhu Zhu enrolled in an art class taught by Henry Purdy, and her desire to paint returned with a vengeance. Purdy, a renowned visual artist and art instructor, had begun the push to have commercial art taught in Charlottetown and started Holland College’s School of Visual Arts in 1977. He continues to teach, present workshops and paint.

“I will never forget meeting and learning from Henry,” she says. “He encouraged me to keep painting and the more I created, the more I became obsessed with it.” Zhu Zhu had her first solo exhibit, Brushing Life, at

the Cornwall Public Library in 2022. The show reflects her daily life on PEI and her memories of her former hometowns of Guizhou and Jiangsu in China. Brushing Life was met with critical acclaim, and she is preparing a fresh exhibit for the library next year. 

Zhu Zhu couldn’t be happier to be living in and creating from a new home that means so much to her.

“Me, my husband and son love living here. The combination of the people and the natural, changing beauty of the Island have made us feel very at home. We never want to leave. On the occasion that we do leave the Island, even if it’s for a short time, we are always happy and excited to return.”

L’artiste Yuzhu Yang trouve un nouveau foyer et revisite la passion de son enfance

à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard

Lorsque l’artiste Yuzhu « Zhu Zhu » Yang s’est établi à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, il y a de cela une décennie, elle était certaine qu’elle saurait bien s’installer dans son nouveau cadre. La peintre de talent est née dans la province du Guizhou, en Chine, dans un petit village entouré de montagnes et de vallées. À l’âge de 10 ans, Zhu et sa famille ont déménagé dans une plus grande ville dans la province du Jiangsu, et elle a juré de ne jamais oublier la maison de ses années d’apprentissage.

À 14 ans, en ayant assez de la routine et des règles de la vie scolaire, Zhu Zhu quitta le monde scolaire pour commencer à travailler; à 17 ans, en quête de voyages et d’aventures, elle déserta la demeure familiale. En 2001, elle rencontra son époux, Danny Shum, à Shenzhen. Le couple se maria en 2004 et accueillit leur fils TY en 2005, tout en vivant encore à Shenzhen.

Danny obtenu en 1992 un diplôme de premier cycle en ingénierie des systèmes industriels à l’Université de Regina. L’économie pour le moins chancelante du Canada lui mena la vie dure un moment avant qu’il ne reparte travailler en Chine. C’est plus tard qu’il rencontra et épousa Zhu Zhu. Lorsque TY célébra ses 8 ans, la jeune famille déménagea à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, où Danny démarra une nouvelle carrière en tant qu’agent immobilier et moniteur de conduite automobile. Il occupa ses temps libres comme citoyen bénévole en patrouille, au service de la communauté de Cornwall et comme premier intervenant médical pour l’Ambulance Saint-Jean.

Zhu Zhu, heureuse dans son rôle de mère au foyer, n’a jamais cessé d’être reconnaissante pour la vie plus facile proposée par l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Devenir insulaire lui donna la latitude nécessaire pour repérer et faire grandir son talent artistique. « Dans l’environnement dans lequel j’ai grandi, la peinture était le passe-temps que je n’aurais jamais osé rêver pratiquer de façon constante, explique Zhu Zhu, installée dans son salon, lequel fait également office de studio d’art. Là d’où je viens, les gens mènent une existence rude; la plupart des personnes négligent leurs émotions et ont mis de côté leurs champs d’intérêt et leurs aspirations parce qu’elles devaient gagner leur vie sans tarder. J’avais perdu mes activités préférées et mes ambitions de vue. Peu après mon emménagement à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, j’ai en revanche été capable de percevoir de nouveau la poésie et la beauté ayant lieu dans ma vie. »

Zhu Zhu s’inscrivit dans un cours d’art offert par Henry Purdy. Son désir de peindre resurgit, plus puissant que jamais. Henry Purdy, un artiste visuel et un professeur d’art de renom, avait commencé à intervenir en faveur de l’enseignement de l’art publicitaire à Charlottetown et fonda le Holland College’s School of Visual Arts [École des arts visuels du Collège Holland] dès 1977. Il n’a pas cessé d’enseigner, d’offrir des ateliers et de peindre.

« Je n’oublierai jamais ma rencontre avec Henry et tout ce que j’ai appris de celui-ci, raconte-t-elle. Il me poussa à persévérer à peindre et plus je créais, plus je devais continuer à créer. » En 2022, Zhu Zhu organisa sa première exposition en solo, Brushing Life [La vie en peinture], à la bibliothèque publique de Cornwall. Le vernissage présente des toiles qui dépeignent son quotidien à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard et ses réminiscences de ses villes natales chinoises, Guizhou et Jiangsu. Cette première exposition a été saluée par la critique; pour l’an prochain, elle en prépare une toute neuve pour la bibliothèque.

Zhu Zhu rayonne à l’idée de vivre et de créer dans un nouveau foyer qui symbolise tant pour elle. 

« Mon mari et mon fils adorent leur vie ici. La combinaison de la population et de la beauté naturelle et fluctuante de l’île nous fait profondément nous sentir à la maison. Nous ne voudrions jamais la quitter. Il nous arrive de devoir délaisser l’île, même pour une courte période, mais c’est toujours avec plaisir et enthousiasme que nous y revenons. »
