How Toronto’s Nitasha Goel Relaunched Her Thriving Apothecary Business in Hubbards, Nova Scotia

Entrepreneur and apothecarist Nitasha Goel knew she needed a change.

She had a good life in Toronto, and her business was doing well, but in 2019 she left the big city behind to move to Hubbards, Nova Scotia. She now lives there happily (with her husband Steve and their beloved dog, Roti), continuing her career and building her business.

He just didn’t know exactly what he was going to be a legend of … until he discovered a little something called latte art, and himself — in the process.

While creating beautiful images in latte froth, Brian has collaborated with clients like Warner Bros., Nespresso, LinkedIn, Lululemon, Urban Decay, Calii Love, Health Canada, Peace Collective, Second Cup and Kahlúa.

High Spirits

Set along the Atlantic shoreline and in the sleepy, albeit breathtaking community of Arisaig, Nova Scotia (a 25-minute drive from Antigonish) is the home of Steinhart Distillery, which among other award-winning spirits, distills a World’s Best Classic Gin. 

At the helm is the owner, Thomas Steinhart, who created his enterprise using distilling knowledge passed down through generations of his family in rural Germany.

Let us share something truly remarkable with you. Five short years after it was founded, Nova Scotia’s Peter Braithwaite Studio has been recognized by Wallpaper* magazine as being one of the most promising practices in the world.

The firm’s founder, Peter Braithwaite, who is originally from Kingsville, Ontario, is passionate about whatever he commits to and has grown comfortable taking risks to realize his evolving aspirations. While he is a highly sought-after architect, his roots lie in carpentry and construction. Earlier in his career, he recognized a deep desire to have artistic direction over the structures he was building so, in 2007, he traded in his tool belt for a laptop to study at the Dalhousie University School of Architecture in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal for achieving the highest level of academic excellence in his graduating class, and he now serves as adjunct professor at his alma mater.

B.J. Snowden: The New Brunswick Whistleblower

How an African American woman from Massachusetts taught millions of Americans about the joys of New Brunswick, using only a keyboard.

She hated ballet.

That’s how one of the oddest pop cultural curios involving New Brunswick began.

Every year, on New Brunswick Day, a clip of musician B. J. Snowden performing her song “New Brunswick” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! makes its way around social media and gets liked and shared. “New Brunswick” has become a sort of unofficial cult theme song for the province.

Without any context, the clip from September 3, 2005 is a mixture of oddity, delight, fun and confusion.

The Rebirth of Prefab

Along with many like-minded Atlantic Canadians, I chose to vacation close to home last summer. It seemed churlish not to on the 150th anniversary of this great country. While on a road trip researching an assignment on Nova Scotia for England’s The Guardian newspaper, I found myself at the Quarterdeck Beachside Villas and Grill. For those in the know it has been a staple of summer (or indeed winter) road trips for decades. But recently expanded by Nicholas Fudge Architects, the Quarterdeck’s true splendour hits and wows you from the second you lay eyes on it.

The Quarterdeck has been here a long time. And Nicholas Fudge is a relatively new architect. Not only do his unique eye and vision create properties — both residential and commercial — unlike any you’ve seen before, but most are prefab, designed and marketed through his company, East Coast Modern, and constructed by Lloyoll Built in their factory on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, and transported to the project site. His name is already synonymous with supermodern, luxurious buildings with a nod to their history. On more than one occasion we have heard colleagues describe properties as being “like Nicholas Fudge.” Fudge obtained his undergraduate degree from St. Francis Xavier University and his Master of Architecture from Dalhousie University. Before starting his own practice in 2013 he worked for Behnisch Architekten in Los Angeles and world-famous MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects in Halifax.
